British Council South Africa is recruiting an Arts Programme Manager with at least five years’ recent professional experience at a senior level in a creative, producing, programming or management capacity in the cultural sector, ideally with links and some knowledge of, and contacts in UK and African arts and cultural sectors. Experience of leading teams to ensure significant impact through successful outcomes from cultural programmes.
Purpose of job
The purpose of the job is to successfully manage the South African Arts programme (British Council Connect ZA) and support the Head of Arts – South Africa and the Southern Africa cluster. You will work with the Head of Arts, to initiate, develop, be accountable for and innovate with cultural partners and stakeholders in South Africa and the UK. As the Arts Programme Manager, you will be required to increase the profile and impact of the programme across the country through effective delivery, team management and innovative ways to grow.
Accountabilities, responsibilities and main duties General leadership, management and HR
- Manage and drive the South African arts team in relation to the Southern Africa arts cluster and UK strategies
- Support communications campaigns and activities including online and PR
- Manage budgets, delivery and M&E
- Support overall fundraising initiatives and drive new ones
- Deputise Head of Arts – South Africa and the Southern Africa cluster as assigned
- Contribute to the development and on-going management of governance structures, e.g. advisory and steering groups
Programme Management
- Lead the projects team on delivering high quality, high profile programmes which reach a wide audience (18-35) and achieve national impact.
- Develop the programme within the Southern African cluster, working as necessary with project managers, business development, partners and stakeholders.
- When required, support the cluster, regional and international arts programmes to extend its impact across our target audiences to strengthen British Council as the key organisation for international collaboration between Southern Africa and UK.
- Project Manage specific projects for the programme.
- Be responsible for supporting the team and delivery of their projects.
- Manage the reporting and daily running of the programme through the following processes: FCCF, project management tools, team workflow processes, monitoring and evaluation and contracting.
- Ensure targets (financial and non-financial) are in place for all content that supports British Council Connect ZA’s programme objectives and provide overall monitoring against them.
- Ensure that the annual arts plan is implemented in line with regional/country strategy.
- Ensure stakeholder management is being maintained and developed both internally and externally.
- Coordinate and contribute to the identification of content through working with Head of Arts Southern Africa and South Africa cluster, Project Managers and art form leads in the UK.
- Have close liaison with UK and South African project partners on activities for the project and impact to the programme, seeking opportunities for collaborations, co-creation and business development.
- Work closely with the Communications Manager to ensure maximum profile and impact for the programme, particularly with online audiences.
- Ensure that all aspects of the programme and relationships with stakeholders reflect British Council values and adhere to its equal opportunity and diversity principles.
- Report and escalate any risk inherent in programme delivery.
