In October, the Huma Creative House Arts and Culture CC will host the Down Second Avenue Poetry Session & Conversations for Es’kia. The project is the first of its kind and pays tribute to the late Professor Es’kia Mphahlele in his home town in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo.
The project hopes to celebrate Mphahlele’s life as a father of African Literature and one of the greatest minds Africa has ever produced. The main objective is to honour and reawake the legacy of Ntate Mphahlele’s works by preserving and passing his legacy to the next generation writers. The event aims to encourage and inject the ‘E’skia’ love of arts and culture around different corners of the community through media awareness and getting the youth engaged in a larger social dialogue about arts and culture in their surroundings, intended to inspire future poets and writers.
The event will open with a documentary of E’skia Mphahlele speeches, followed by conversation by Dr. Lesiba Ramokolo of the Down Second Avenue book, concluding with a poetry performances.The poetry line-up will be led by young poetic scholars and professionals spanning from different corners of the country with a future aim to compile an poetry Anthology,dedicated to Es’kia Mphahlele for school curriculum. Huma Creative House Arts and Culture plans to create the event as an annual one by holding it at different places around the country with the help of their stakeholder, The Arts & Culture Trust. This will increase the visibility of South Africa’s cultural values by illustrating the richness and diversity of cultural expressions from the traditional to the contemporary, promoting Arts and Culture.
