Joburg Theatre presents a master class poetry and performance workshop for artists with Abena Koomson from New York. The workshop will focus on poetry and performance. It will also look at the music and performance industry experience for artists in New York.

In this seminal composition, Fela Kuti declares: “Nothing without water.” What are the other sustaining influences in our lives as artists and activists? Inspired by this question, we will write and perform poems about the things we cannot live without.

Abena Koomson is a performer, educator and wordsmith of Ghanaian descent living in New York City. Her credits include originating the role of Funmilayo Kuti, mother of Fela in the Off-Broadway production and tony award-winning Fela! On Broadway. Reprising her role on Broadway as understudy for Lillias White & Patti LaBelle. She has shared the stage with notable performers such as Angelique Kidjo, Les Nubians, Baloji, The Roots, Kronos Quartet & Tony Allen. She currently serves as Dean of Upper School at Harlem Village Academies.
